About
Born in Montreal, I studied, worked and travelled throughout all of Canada. At an early age, interest in painting and art was sparked by lessons from my grandfather, an amateur painter and professional fly-fishing guide in the fjords of Gros Morne, Newfoundland. A man of few words, “Leave the small fry” and “Paint what you like” was his only advice.
A seven year stint tree-planting from the coast of British Columbia to the shores of Hudson Bay allowed time to explore the world and paint. After planting a million trees, I transitioned into the burgeoning film business of Vancouver. As luck would have it, I began working in a make-up effects lab for the soon to be hit “The X-Files”. Over the next twelve years, working between sculpture, paint, make-up effects and continuity, I accumulated experience on several hundred television episodes and dozens of movies.
But the inspiration for my later paintings came from a surprising source. I answered an ad for Tulip Painters needed for the Ottawa Tulip Festival. Maybe it was the crowds of flower enthusiasts on a warm spring day that pushed my painting towards expressionism and away from the expected, traditional, plein-air approach. Speed was required. Large brushes, colour and line. People, passing by in droves, would stop, chat and pose for photos. It was exciting. There was something visceral about it all. Something real, substance carved in light and colour.
After moving to Switzerland in 2010, I continued to paint outdoors and be energised as I engaged with all those who pass by as I paint in in the open air.
Now, back in Canada, I am working again in the Vancouver film industry on paint and sculpture while continuing to paint outside, sometimes on my balcony and in other Vancouver scenes.
